Anxiety treatment in Austin, TX

Most people will experience anxiety at some point during their lifetime, whether it’s giving a presentation for work or going on a date; however, this anxiety is temporary and doesn’t often affect a person’s life. Then there are people who have a true anxiety disorder, in which they constantly feel worried or fearful. For these individuals, anxiety never goes away. In fact, it can be so severe that it can affect a person’s professional or personal life.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

There are different kinds of anxiety disorders. These types include,

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): symptoms of GAD include chronic anxiety and worry even when there is no threat or stressor

Panic disorder: this sudden and intense condition often causes more physical than psychological symptoms such as dizziness, heart palpitations, chest pain and difficulty breathing

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): this condition develops as a result of a traumatic event that triggers feelings of anxiety, stress and self-harm (common in soldiers and those who have experienced natural disasters)

Social anxiety disorder (also referred to as social phobia): when faced with a social situation, those with social anxiety disorder may feel intense feelings of panic, worry, stress and self-consciousness

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): this disorder causes unwanted and persistent thoughts as well as repetitive behaviors. Common obsessions and compulsions include counting, cleaning or hand washing.

Dealing with Anxiety? We Are Here to Help

Here in Austin, Northwest Psychiatry provides patients with outpatient psychiatry services to handle everything from depression and anxiety to personality disorders and ADHD. Our goal as your doctor is to be able to provide the proper treatment plan that will help you get your anxiety symptoms under control to improve your mental and emotional health and to make living with anxiety easier.

If you suspect that you may be dealing with an anxiety disorder the first step is to schedule a psychiatry evaluation with us. During this evaluation, we will talk with you more in-depth about the specific symptoms you are experiencing. From this, we will outline the best approach for getting your anxiety under control. A psychiatrist differs from a psychologist in that we are able to prescribe medication.

While medication cannot cure your anxiety disorder it will be able to alleviate symptoms. The most common type of medication prescribed is anti-anxiety medication, which can reduce your anxiety, worry and panic attacks. Antidepressants and beta-blockers may also be prescribed, depending on the type and severity of the symptoms you are experiencing. While one medication may work perfectly for one person it may not work as effectively for another, and our psychiatric team will work with you to find the right medication to treat your anxiety symptoms.

If you are dealing with symptoms of an anxiety disorder it’s time to turn to the team at Northwest Psychiatry for an evaluation. Call us today at (512) 342-7979 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Arvinder Walia.
