Managing ADD

ADD has the reputation of being a condition that predominantly affects children. However, the symptoms of this condition can linger into adulthood. And for those with children who have the condition, it can be quite a struggle at times. Fortunately, Dr. Arvinder Walia of Northwest Psychiatry, serving Austin, TX, and the nearby region, is available to help. But before you schedule a visit, it may help to learn more about managing it.

Psychological Counseling

At our practice in Austin, TX, we encourage those who walk through the door to undergo psychological counseling. Through this treatment, you'll learn how to cope with the struggles associated with ADD, such as poor planning. You'll learn how to break down a task into smaller components and prioritize them. For this particular aspect of therapy, you'll also learn how to keep track of tasks.

Time management is also an area our practitioner will address. You'll learn how to schedule, keep yourself on track, and complete tasks in a timely manner.

Procrastination can often be a struggle for a person with ADD, but, fortunately, it's possible to learn how to finish a task sooner and not wait until the last minute.

Because this condition can cause you to be distracted easily, your therapy may include learning how to remain focused and on task.

We also teach adaptive thinking, meaning you change your thought patterns. This can help with task management because you learn which thoughts are unhealthy and counterproductive.

Since emotional stress can be a trigger or exasperate your symptoms, this therapy may be used to teach you how to cope or reduce your stress levels.

These are merely some examples of the types of treatments we offer for ADD.

Create a Routine

Winging life can make every day a struggle for you or your child with ADD. Ultimately, you can make life less stressful by creating a schedule and adhering to it.

Although the schedule doesn't have to mean that you eat each morning at exactly 8:00 am, you should complete (or have your child complete) the main tasks in an orderly manner around the same time each day.

Create a Schedule Each Week

Minimize the stress of not knowing what to expect or having difficulties completing all your tasks by creating a schedule at or before the beginning of each week.

Dr. Walia of Northwest Psychiatry, serving Austin, TX, and the neighboring communities, offers an array of treatments to help you or your child manage ADD, though you can take some steps at home. However, the first step should be scheduling an appointment!
